The Day When They Honored The Man
(Dedicated to Olene, my wife)
Two young men stepped out from where they stood,
"We'd like to address you sir, if we could,"
They spoke of his dreams, and the things he had done,
That day when they honored the man.
I recall the moment as he stood on the stand,
When they presented him with his trophy so grand,
The audience applauded -- there was music from the band,
That day when they honored the man.
But I noticed something in his face at that time,
I determined that I would understand,
For he was paying no attention to the glory of his fans,
That day when they honored the man.
Then I noticed a glisten as his eyes and "her's" met,
They were focused on a face and "her" eyes too were wet,
The eyes of the "strength" behind all of his plans,
That day when they honored the man.
Yes, I was there that day when they honored the man,
For outstanding achievement for the work of his hands,
But what I saw plainly spoke of who really belonged on that stand,
That day when they honored the man.
